Pokemon Yellow: Mystery and adventure never to be recreated

I've always thought that pokemon yellow was the most insanely awesome, and hardest pokemon game to date. No matter how many new, graphically stunning 3-d games that boast fancy designs and new attacks that Game Freak throws out at us, I still long to revisit one of the most original games in the whole pokemon series. I deeply regret throwing my good old Gameboy Colour in the bin a couple of years ago, probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life..   ;)

Not one pokemon series after Gen I and Gen II has evoked such a sense of mystery and adventure as Pokemon Yellow did, and I'm sure that any fellow Pokemon gamer would agree. I still remember the first steps into the wild grass on route 1, and the feeling that an epic adventure was about to begin when progressing through the grass. The whole idea of undergoing a grand adventure with a cute yellow creature called Pikachu following your every step was unheard of, especially in the RPG gaming category. I think that the sense of adventure and mystery created by the Red, Blue and Yellow games is something that can never be recreated.

Although Pokemon Yellow was not aesthetically beautiful comparative to the latest installment in the Pokemon series, I think the gameplay elements were what reeled in the millions of Pokemon fans that still stay loyal to the series today. The challenging nature of Yellow was what reeled me in, as well as the fact that I had been given the opportunity to raise and fight with up to six 'creatures' that I could teach awesomely powerful moves such as hyper beam. Compared to every other game in the series, Pokemon Yellow is on a higher level in terms of difficulty as well. The gym leaders in my opinion were much tougher in Yellow than in Gold, Silver or Crystal, in terms of leveling and general pokemon. Battling legendaries was such an adrenaline and excitement rush, and the thrill brought on by catching them was unexplainable! Although legendaries are present in every single pokemon game, the fact that these were the first, and to put it simply, 'ultimate pokemon' was purely awesome. Mewtwo had that 'unstoppable' aura that isn't present in the latter games, as typing and such as enabled ultimate pokemon such as Mewtwo to have weaknesses. :(

Apart from the fact that I find Pokemon Yellow simply incredible, I still very much enjoy playing the latter games, such as Emerald, Fire Red, Platinum, Heart Gold and finally Pokemon Black. Emerald and Fire Red from the 3rd Gen brought in my possibly my favorite pokemon ever, Rayquaza, and also added many elements to the game that improved it greatly. The 4th Gen games Platinum and Heart Gold (My favorite out of Gen 4) were another incredible improvement to the series, my particular favorite in Platinum is that you don't have to actually catch every pokemon, as you only have to 'see' them to record their data. This took a lot of hassle out of the game and allowed me to almost complete it in a lesser time frame. It unfortunately sacrificed the principle objective of the original pokemon series. 'Gotta Catch 'Em All!'. Heart Gold is undoubtedly my favorite, because it combines the original Gen II series with the graphically superior 4th Gen series. I thought that was incredible, even though it was publicly seen as a filler between new pokemon series. I'll go on about Pokemon Heart Gold in a future post.. ;)

That's all I can be bothered writing about for now!

Btw...Did you know that you can somewhat legitimately obtain a Mew in Pokemon Yellow :P

  1. (Sorry if my english is not "perfect" because im portuguese.)
I also think that the hardest pokemon is yellow.
And i'v something to say about this news gen(white/black):
Allright that it's new pokemon, new graphics, etc. But if we compare this new pokemons to old one's (kanto, johto) the old one's are the best... For example: it's the third time that game freak put the starting fire pokemon with fight... For me game freak is cuting of in the imagination... And they also should make a remake to yellow, crystal, ruby, saphire and emerald... :D

  2. I agree with you mate! The new gens (while being very good in terms of gameplay and graphics) lack the originality that the older gens had. I also think that Game Freak should diversify the grass starter... I don't think it's ever had a secondary typing..:D
